Contraception FAQs

There are lots of different methods of contraception to choose from - they're all free and they can all stop you from getting pregnant if used correctly.

If you have a question not answered below, please get in touch by telephone or email...

Is contraception free and where can I get it?

Contraception is free for women and men of all ages through the NHS. You can get free contraception, including emergency contraception from a GP (unless they say they don’t provide contraception services), a contraception clinic or sexual health clinic, a young person’s service or some genitourinary (GUM) clinics.

You can also get free emergency contraception from most NHS walk-in centres and minor injuries units, some hospital accident and emergency departments (phone first to check) and some pharmacies (if you are 16 or over you can buy the emergency hormonal pill from most pharmacies, they also sell condoms, diaphragms, caps and spermicides).

How can I find a contraception service?

You can call our dedicated phone line on 01482 605304 which is run by NHS East Riding of Yorkshire. Visit www.luveyorks.co.uk for details about contraceptive advice services in the East Riding.

You can find details of general practices (GP surgeries) and pharmacies in England at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk.

You can also get details of your nearest contraception, genitourinary medicine (GUM) or sexual health clinic from a telephone directory, health centre, local pharmacy, hospital, midwife, health visitor or advice centre.

You can get details of GUM or sexual health clinics from the Sexual Health Line on 0800 567 123 or at www.condomessentialwear.co.uk or by calling Sexwise on 0800 28 29 30 or visit www.ruthinking.co.uk.
